Starting in the beginning of August, Mars will be closer to the Earth than it has been in over 5,000 years. This will be the closest approach between the two planets in recorded history. The next event like this will be in 2287.Posted by Administrator
Jupiter's gravity is playing with Mars' orbit and causing it to come closer to the Earth.
In August 2010, Mars will rise in the East at about 10 pm and reach it's highest point near 3 am.
The climax of these movements will be on August 27th, 2010, Mars will rise at nightfall and reach it's highest point by 12:30 am. Mars could appear as large as the moon with the naked eye during this period.
Mars will be approx. 34,649,589 miles from the Earth and will appear as the brightest object in the night sky, aside from the moon.
This event will never be seen again by anyone who is currently alive.
